Buying Flooring in Sacramento: A Practical Local Guide

Flooring advice written for the whole country is written for nowhere in particular. Sacramento has its own conditions, and they genuinely change which floor is the right answer: long dry summers with real heat, mild wet winters, a great deal of slab-on-grade construction, and a housing stock that runs from pre-war bungalows to new build.

Heat, dryness and what they do to wood

Wood moves with humidity. Our summers are long and dry and our winters are damp, and that annual swing is what opens gaps between boards in winter and closes them tight in summer. Solid hardwood feels this most. Engineered hardwood, built as a veneer over a dimensionally stable core, moves far less, which is why it is usually the better recommendation here, and the only sensible one over a slab.

Whatever you choose, let it acclimate in the room before installation. In this climate that is not a formality.

Slab on grade, and why it decides so much

A great many Sacramento homes sit on a concrete slab, and concrete passes moisture upward even when it appears bone dry. Solid hardwood should not be nailed to a slab. Engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank and tile all handle it, provided the slab is flat and any moisture testing has been done first.
