What shape is it?
Measure the pan the glass sits in, not the outer edge of the pit.
When you pick a product above, its own bag size takes over. Two inches of depth keeps the burner ports just covered, which is where the flame looks best.

Measure the pan
The glass fills the burner pan, not the whole pit. A fireplace hearth tapers, so it takes the front width, back width and depth.
Choose the depth
Two inches covers the burner ports and holds the flame low and even. Deeper looks fuller but burns no better, it just weighs more.
Weight, then bags
Volume at one hundred pounds per cubic foot, the industry figure for tempered glass, plus a tenth for spread, rounded up to whole bags.
