Choosing Well
How to Choose Natural Stone.

Natural stone is the only surface in the catalog that was finished before anyone thought to sell it. Every slab and tile is a section through geology, and the variation people occasionally call a flaw is the entire reason to buy it.

The families differ in hardness and behavior more than in beauty. Granite and quartzite are the hardest and take heat without complaint. Marble and limestone are softer and brighter and will etch where acid touches them. Travertine and slate bring texture and a warm, matte hand.

All of it is porous, which makes sealing necessary but not difficult: a penetrating sealer once a year, wiped on and wiped off. In exchange you get a surface that ages into something the day it was installed could not match.

Common Questions
Natural Stone FAQ

Natural stone rewards the right care. Here are the questions our specialists answer most about selecting and living with it.

Marble is softer and etches with acids; granite is hard and durable; quartzite looks like marble but wears like granite. Choose by where it goes and how hard it is used.

Yes. Most stone is sealed on install and re-sealed every one to three years depending on use. A simple water-bead test tells you when it is time.

Granite and quartzite handle kitchen heat and acids; marble and softer stones are better for lower-traffic baths and vanities where a little etching is acceptable.

Polished resists staining slightly better but shows etching more; honed hides wear but absorbs more, so keep it sealed. Both clean with a pH-neutral cleaner only.

Natural mineral deposits create the veining, so every slab and tile is different. Order from one lot and dry-lay the pieces to blend the variation.

Many stones can, with the right finish and sealer. A textured or tumbled finish adds slip resistance; confirm the specific stone is rated for freeze-thaw if your climate needs it.
